Immunology and Vaccine-Preventable Diseases
To understand how vaccines work and the foundation ofย
recommendations for their use, it is helpful to understand theย
basic function of the human immune system. The followingย
description is simplified; many excellent immunology textbooksย
provide additional detail.ย
Immunity is the ability of the human body to tolerate theย
presence of material indigenous to the body and to eliminateย
foreign substances. This discriminatory ability to eliminateย
foreign substances is performed by a complex system ofย
interacting cells called the immune system. Since mostย
organisms (e.g., bacteria, viruses, and fungi) are identified asย
foreign, the ability to identify and eliminate these substancesย
provides protection from infectious diseases. Immunity isย
generally specific to a single organism or group of closelyย
related organisms.
