India won Thomas Cup-2022
India’s men’s badminton team defeated 14-time champions Indonesia 3-0 to win the Thomas Cup for the first time. India’s Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth and Chirag Shetty and Satwiksairaj Rankireddy gave a one-sided defeat to defending champions powerhouse Indonesia in the final of the Thomas Cup-2022 held in Bangkok, Thailand.
India’s Lakshya Sen started the thrilling match with an 8-21, 21-17, 21-16 win over Anthony Ginting. India’s doubles pair of Satwik and Chirag then beat Ehsan-Sukamuljo 18-21, 23-21, 21-19 to give India a 2-0 lead. In the third game, India’s Kidambi Srikanth defeated Jonathan Christie 21-15, 23-21 to make India 3-0 title contenders.
About Thomas Cup:
Since 1949, the Thomas Cup has been held once every three years, which was later modified to be held in two years from the year 1982. Countries like Indonesia, China, Denmark, and Malaysia have dominated the tournament so far. India became the champion for the first time in the 73-year history of the Thomas Cup and with this India became the sixth team to win the tournament.
New Chief Election Commissioner of India
Recently the Union Ministry of Law and Justice announced the taking over by Rajiv Kumar as the next Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) with effect from May 15, 2022. Sushil Chandra was working in this post before Rajiv Kumar, who left his post on 14 May. The appointment of Rajiv Kumar to the post of Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) was made by the President of India in accordance with Article 324(2) of the Constitution of India.
About Rajeev Kumar:
Rajiv Kumar was born on the date 19 February 1960. He was a 1984 batch IAS officer of Bihar/Jharkhand cadre, who retired from the post of IAS in February-2020. He has earned several degrees in his academic career including BSc, LLB, PGDM, and Masters in Public Policy. Kumar has also served as a director on the Central Board of Reserve Bank of India (RBI), State Bank of India (SBI), and NABARD. Apart from these, Kumar has also served as a member of several boards and committees. Kumar was appointed as the Chairman of the Public Enterprises Selection Board in April 2020 and was serving as the Election Commissioner with effect from September 1, 2020. During his tenure, he has gained over 37 years of experience in the Social Sector, Environment & Forests, Human Resources, Finance, and Banking sectors in Central and State Cadre Ministries for the Government.
