New France is the general name for the French possessions in North America (1534 - late eighteenth century). These possessions disappeared after the Battle of Abraham's Fields in 1759, when the French lost to the British, and after the purchase of Louisiana in 1803 for $15 million. In 2009, the federal government of Canada decided to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Battle by preparing a theatrical performance that would recreate the main events and battles of September 13, 1759. This caused such a storm of protests from Quebec citizens - in particular, patriotic circles - that, under pressure from Quebec public opinion, the Canadian government was forced to cancel the celebrations.
