Can Donald Trump reverse Joe Biden's climate policy? | BBC News

The UN's latest climate summit is coming to a close in Azerbaijan, and there have been more calls for countries to take further action to reduce emissions.

Crucial to any global response is America - the world's only superpower and the world's second largest emitter.

Now, Donald Trump is about to become its president - and he has been fiercely critical of Joe Biden's approach to climate change.

Our Analysis Editor Ros Atkins has been looking at what Donald Trump may do instead.

COP29: UN climate talks on verge of collapse as countries walk out over cash | BBC News

UN climate talks are on the verge of collapse as a group representing small island states walks out of a key meeting at COP29 in Azerbaijan.

Nearly 200 countries are trying to reach a deal on money to help poorer countries tackle the effects of climate change.

However on Friday, poorer countries dismissed an offer of $250bn (£199bn) per year by 2035 and had been pushing for a significant increase.

Famine-hit Sudan camp gets first aid convoy in months | BBC News

A famine-stricken camp housing about 500,000 displaced people in Sudan has received its first convoy of aid in months.

The United Nations' trucks arrived in Zamzam - which houses masses forced to flee during Sudan's 18-month civil war - on Friday.

The UN's World Food Programme (WFP) said food deliveries had been held up for months by fierce fighting in the nearby Darfur city of el-Fasher, as well as the "impassable" roads brought on by the rainy season.

The war - a power struggle between the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) - has created the world's largest humanitarian crisis, forcing 10 million people from their homes and pushing communities into hunger.

Central Beirut residential building hit by massive Israeli strikes | BBC News

A massive Israeli strike has flattened a residential building in centre of the Lebanese capital Beirut. At least 11 people have now been killed and more than 60 injured, according to Lebanon's health ministry.

The eight-storey building was completely destroyed without warning by five missiles in the capital's densely-populated Basta district, according to Lebanon's National News Agency (NNA).

Explosions shook the city following the Israeli attack, which happened at about 04:00 local time (02:00 GMT) on Saturday.

The Israeli military made no immediate comment about the Basta strike.

The scale of Saturday's air strike and the fact it happened without warning indicate that a senior Hezbollah figure could have been the target, although there has been no confirmation from either the armed group or the Israeli military.

We speak to Robert Wilkie, the man in charge of preparing Trump’s defence policy.

He tells us what’s happening behind the scenes, how Trump could negotiate an end to the war in Ukraine, and why he’s picked a Fox New presenter as his defence secretary.

COP29 $250bn climate cash offer criticised as 'deeply disappointing' by poorer countries | BBC News

The COP29 climate summit in Baku, Azerbaijan has released a new draft finance deal that would have developed nations take the lead.

The deal proposes wealthier countries give $250bn (£199bn) per year by 2035 to developing nations to help tackle climate change.

But small island nations, including countries like Tonga, Samoa and Vanuatu in the Pacific, and Barbados and Bermuda in the Caribbean, are "deeply disappointed" with the new cash offer, saying the proposed $250bn a year by 2030 is a cap that will "severely stagnate climate action efforts".

Delegates in Baku have been trying to debate a new deal.

Vladimir Putin warns West as Russia hits Ukraine with new missile | BBC News

Russian President Vladimir Putin said an attack by his forces on the eastern Ukrainian city of Dnipro on Thursday morning was carried out using "a new conventional intermediate-range missile".

He said that the missile, codenamed Oreshnik, was a response to Ukraine's use of US and UK-supplied long-range weaponry towards targets inside Russia.

Putin also suggested Russia could attack military facilities of those countries which allowed their weapons to be used for this purpose.

The US and the UK authorised the use of US ATACMS and UK-supplied Storm Shadow missiles this week, in a major change of policy.
