​​Pothundy Dam

Pothundy dam is situated en route Nelliyampathy, about 8 kms from Nemmara. It is one of the oldest dams in India. Built in the 19th century, Pothundy is known for the unusual ingredients that went into building it. The dam was constructed using a mixture of molasses and quicklime instead of the usual concrete. It is built across Meenachadypuzha and Padipuzha rivers, which are tributaries of Ayalar River.

Pothundy dam is the major water source for people in Chittur taluk. There is also a garden and a walking track on top of the reservoir. The picture perfect location of the dam, surrounded by mountains, draws a lot of visitors here.

​​Thangal Hills

Popular for its cascading waterfalls, blue mountains, meandering rivers, clear waters and misty environment, Vagamon is a quaint little hilltown bordering the districts of Kottayam and Idukki. Three mighty hills known as Thangal, Murugan and Kurisumala form the essence of the town. Colloquially known as Thangal Para, Thangal Hills are an important pilgrimage spot of the Muslims, located barely 5 kms from Vagamon. The whopping boulder at the top of the hill houses the mausoleum of Sheikh Fariduddin (mazaar/ dargaah of Sheikh Fariduddin) and is visited by thousands of Muslim pilgrims annually during the festival of Urs. Just below the rock boulder at the bottom of the hill, is a mosque used by the devotees and the locals to offer their prayers.

Surrounded by emerald green meadows and verdant tea- plantations, the hilltop also provides some awe-striking panoramic vistas of the valley below lined with trees of pepper, vanilla, rubber and coffee. Thangal Para makes for an ideal weekend getaway for couples and families alike, hushed in the serenity and quietude of nature’s bliss. Besides, the summit is also popular amidst the mountaineers, trekkers and adventure seekers as the hill provides some wonderful trekking opportunities both for the beginners and experts. The crevices and crannies in the terrain enable both novices and pros to try out their luck here. All in all, Thangal Para is a beautiful tourist spot in Vagamon and we recommend you to definitely visit it if in the area.

​​🐘 Nedungayam Elephant Park

Situated at a distance of 18 km from Nilambur town,Nedumkayam is noted specially for its rich rain forests. The wooden rest house built here by the British offers a panoramic view of the elephants and deers grazing in the forest near by. One has to get prior permission from the Forest Department to enter the forest zone. Heavy restrictions are imposed as a measure to save the existing forest land. An elephant taming center is also here.

​​🔝 Alappuzha Lighthouse

Known for its breathtaking 360-degree views, the Alappuzha Lighthouse(Alleppey lighthouse) is an old-world charm. It is 4 km away from the main town lying on the sea bridge facing the Arabian sea coast. The 1862 lighthouse has a museum that preserves old equipment like oil lamps and items that testify to its 150-year-old journey.

Constructed using laterite stones and teak, the Allepey Lighthouse is 30 meters high and can hold up to 25 people at a time. The spiralling staircase with over 100 wooden steps is worth climbing for the magnificent view of Allepey Beach and surrounding areas.
It initially had a double wick, coconut oil lamp, which was used until 1952. Later the lamp was reinstated by a DA gas flasher and a 500 mm drum optic. The old equipment was changed again by an emergency lantern of 300mm and a direct drive system which finally was replaced by a 230V Metal Halide Lamp in 1999.

​​Thiruvananthapuram Zoo

Thiruvananthapuram Zoo, one of the oldest terrarium in the country which was established as a supplemental to the Napier Museum in the year 1857 by the former Maharaja of Travancore, which was originally opened for recreational purposes, the zoo becomes a conservation center of wildlife over a period of time.

The zoo has a wide array of 35 species of animals, 28 species of birds and 17 kinds of reptiles. The zoo also houses botanical gardens with more than 200 species of trees, thousands of beautiful plants, orchids and snake farm.

​​CVN Kalari at Edakkad

Kalaripayattu, the traditional and exclusive martial art form of Kerala, is widely acclaimed as a synthesis of body control, treatment, and armed and unarmed combat. This immaculate martial art form can be witnessed in its fullest, bearing all traditional and orthodox techniques and systems of treatment, at the C.V.N. Kalari at Edakkad in Kozhikode. The Kalari (arena) itself is set amidst serene surroundings with an ambience that is most suited for the practice of Kalaripayattu.

The C.V.N. Kalari at Edakkad is run by Mr. Sudhakaran Gurukal (master), who is a respected teacher and also an accomplished Marma physician. At the early age of seven itself, boys and girls can start training. The classes conducted here are for Kalaripayattu, Massage and Marma treatment, and a dedicated student can master all these in a span of one to one-and-a-half years' time. The centre also conducts demonstrations and workshops on Kalaripayattu at venues selected by interested parties and also for Television programmes, Movies, Dancers, Theatre artists, Athletes etc.

Malayala Kalagramam (MAKAM) is a centre for art and ideas which aims at providing children and youngsters a Kalari (stage) to practise and perform all forms of fine arts. The centre offers part-time as well as full-time courses in painting, sculpture, music and dance and art pottery. Yoga and Sanskrit are also taught here. The fraternity centre of the Kalagramam conducts seminars, symposia, extension lectures, in-service programmes and special projects in different fields of art and humanities. The studies at the centre are aimed at familiarising classical and contemporary trends and techniques in art as well as to utilise art better in daily life. Visitors are allowed to watch classes with the prior permission from the Director.
