🇨🇳China's new INTEROCEANIC railway through 🇧🇴Bolivia, 🇧🇷Brazil and 🇵🇪Peru
China will assess the possibility of building a railway between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, passing through Bolivia and Brazil, Bolivian President Luis Arce announced on the sidelines of the G20 summit.
🛣 The proposed railway, often referred to as the Central Bi-Oceanic Railway Corridor, is an ambitious project connecting the BRICS partners Brazil and Bolivia to the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans via Peru.
🔍 Here's what you need to know:
◾️ Location: The 3,750 km corridor will stretch from the Port of Santos in Brazil, traverse Bolivia's Andes and Amazon, and end at Peru’s megaport of Chancay.
◾️ Capabilities: Estimated to cost between $10-15 billion, the railway aims to increase freight transport capacity to 10 million tonnes per year, running at speeds of 100 km/h.
◾️ BRICS advantage: Bolivia, as a landlocked country, stands to benefit significantly from improved trade links with its neighbours, providing critical pathways for economic growth.
◾️ Belt and Road: The initiative aligns with China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), a global strategy to boost connectivity through major infrastructure.
🏗 The construction and modernisation work will be shared among the three participating countries, all of which need to build and upgrade their respective railway sections.
