• When the government legally bans the old currency and announces the introduction of a new currency, it is called demonetization.

• The main reason for demonetization is to curb black money, corruption, fake notes and terrorist activity.

• Demonetization has happened three times in India so far (1946, 1978 and 2016) and twice in independent India (1978 and 2016).

• First of all, on January 12, 1946 (RBI Governor- C.D. Deshmukh), 500, 1000 and 10 thousand notes were banned during British rule, which were reintroduced in 1954.

• For the second time on 16 January 1978 (RBI Governor I.G. Patel) 1000, 5000 and 10 thousand rupee notes were banned by the Janata Party government of Morarji Desai.

• In the year 1987, 500 rupee note was again introduced and in the year 2000, 1000 rupee note was again introduced.

• For the third time, on 8 November 2016, Prime Minister Narendra Modi demonetized 500 and 1000 rupee notes and the government issued new 500 and 2000 rupee notes in place of these.

• On 30 June 2011, 1 paisa, 2 paisa, 5 paisa, 10 paisa, 20 paisa, 25 paisa coins were discontinued.

• जब सरकार पुरानी मुद्रा को कानूनी तौर पर बंद कर देती है और नई मुद्रा लाने की घोषणा करती है तब इसे विमुद्रीकरण कहते हैं।

• विमुद्रीकरण करने का मुख्य कारण कालाधन, भ्रष्टाचार, नकली नोट और आतंकी गतिविधि पर अंकुश लगाना है।

• भारत में अभी तक तीन बार (1946, 1978 तथा 2016) तथा स्वतंत्र भारत में दो बार (1978 तथा 2016) विमुद्रीकरण हुआ है।

• सर्वप्रथम 12 जनवरी, 1946 को (RBI गवर्नर-सी०डी० देखमुख) ब्रिटिश शासन में 500, 1000 तथा 10 हजार के नोटों को बंद किया गया था जिसे 1954 में पुनः शुरू किया गया।

• दूसरी बार 16 जनवरी 1978 को (RBI गवर्नर आई जी पटेल) मोरारजी देसाई की जनता पार्टी सरकार द्वारा 1000, 5000 तथा 10 हजार के नोट बंद किये गए थे।

• 8 नवम्बर, 2016 को विमुद्रीकरण के समय RBI के गवर्नर उर्जित पटेल थे।

• 30 जून, 2011 को 1 पैसा, 2 पैसा, 5 पैसा, 10 पैसा, 20 पैसा, 25 पैसा के सिक्के बंद किए गए थे।

• 'विमुद्रीकरण देश की अर्थव्यवस्था को प्रकाशित कर देगा', यह आदर्श वाक्य नरेन्द्र मोदी का है।

• 2000 रुपये के नोट भारतीय रिजर्व बैंक नोट मुद्रण प्राइवेट लि (BRBNMPL), मैसूर (कर्नाटक) में छपती है।
