Pro Tip for Mains
This year we had 9 questions on Social Issues in the GS Paper 1. The questions of society have become complex over the years and quite difficult to answer for many.
If you wish to improve your society part then you can focus on the following points:
1. Many of the topics listed under sociology portion of the paper have conceptual nouns such as globalisation, communalism, regionalism etc. When a question is asked on such topics, simply start your answer with a brief definition of the term. You must have these textbook definitions in your notes.
2. The questions asked will always be generic, so the best way forward is to make 2 or 3 subheadings from the keywords mentioned question for a 10 marker or a 15 marker.(This one is the easy part).
3. For generating points the templates can vary but, in a nutshell, you must use as many keywords associated with the subheading in specific points under the subheadings. For instance: Use keywords like Son of the soil, Linguistic chauvinism, regional disparity, cultural assertion etc on a question on regionalism. Give examples if you can for specific points. Refer to this topper note for reference.
Similarly, for other topics you must have a list of common keywords that can be useful. If you find difficulty in finding those keywords, look into topper copies or refer to the MAC of GS-1 to save time.
4. The conclusion can be importance oriented or solution oriented. Importance can be shown through using DPSPs, Preamble and other constitutional articles. Solutions can be given by either quoting some committees formed on those issues. For instance the Xaxa committee on tribals.
If there are no committees that you have in your notes related to the question asked, use your GS common sense and understanding of the topic to generate a solution which should have good keywords.
Remember: Social Issues is the smallest of the three subjects of GS-1 and you can’t make the mistake of avoiding note-making for it. If you are someone who has just appeared in Mains this year, this is the time for you to make/enrich your notes on Social Issues.
