Glossary of Envistats released by MOSPI-GOI.

Collection of important key terms for environment in this authoritative source.

Useful for Prelims.

In 2024 CSE prelims, 8 questions worth 16 marks came directly from class 11 & 12th geography ncert.

UPSC did not even modify the statements, instead just copy pasted.

Before reading anything, read ncert first for geography & history.

The Return on time invested is quite high for the NCERTs of History and Geography.

EWS judgement.pdf
412.0Kb
Summary of the judgement by MP high court in the EWS case:

1. The court ruled against the petitioners, stating that the government has the discretion to frame policies regarding reservations and relaxations.

2. Since EWS is constitutionally recognized as a separate category, it cannot automatically claim the same relaxations as SC/ST/OBC candidates.

3. The court also upheld the distinction between state and central OBC lists, dismissing the argument that state OBCs should receive the same benefits as central OBCs.

Nothing changes for EWS. No relaxation of attempts and age from the court.

British Colonial Policies in India which are important for Prelims and GS-1-Mains

1. Policy of Ring-Fence

β€’ Introduced by: Lord Warren Hastings (1773–1785)
β€’ Objective: Establish buffer zones around British territories to protect against external threats.
β€’ Implementation: Formed alliances with neighboring states, providing them with military support to deter invasions.

2. Subsidiary Alliance

β€’ Introduced by: Lord Wellesley (1798–1805)
β€’ Objective: Expand British influence by making Indian states dependent on British military power.
β€’ Terms: Indian rulers accepted British forces within their territories and refrained from independent foreign relations, effectively losing sovereignty.

3. Doctrine of Lapse

β€’ Propounded by: Lord Dalhousie (1848–1856)
β€’ Objective: Annex princely states lacking a direct male heir.
β€’ Outcome: Several states, including Satara and Jhansi, were annexed, leading to discontent among Indian rulers.

4. Policy of Subordinate Isolation

β€’ Introduced by: Lord Hastings (1813–1823)
β€’ Objective: Ensure Indian princely states acted as subordinate allies to the British.
β€’ Terms: States renounced external sovereignty while retaining internal autonomy, increasing British influence without direct annexation.

5. Forward Policy

β€’ Introduced by: Lord Auckland (1836–1842)
β€’ Objective: Counter Russian expansion in Central Asia and protect India’s northwest frontier.
β€’ Implementation: Involved British intervention in Afghanistan, leading to the First Anglo-Afghan War (1839–1842).

6. Policy of Masterly Inactivity

β€’ Introduced by: Lord John Lawrence (1864–1869)
β€’ Objective: Adopt a non-interventionist approach towards Afghanistan to avoid unnecessary conflicts.
β€’ Implementation: Refrained from interfering in Afghan internal affairs, maintaining peace at the frontier and preventing foreign influence.

7. Policy of Proud Reserve

β€’ Introduced by: Lord Lytton (1876–1880)
β€’ Objective: Establish scientific frontiers and safeguard British spheres of influence, particularly concerning Afghanistan.
β€’ Implementation: Adopted a more assertive foreign policy, leading to the Second Anglo-Afghan War (1878–1880) and the Treaty of Gandamak (1879), which increased British influence in Afghan affairs.
