🇬🇧 BRITS' CULTURE SHOCK FROM OTHER COUNTRIES

Expanding your horizons can come with some social and culinary surprises in countries popular for tourism. So travellers from the UK are most surprised by three items.

1. Social interactions. Despite Ireland being closest to home, this category recorded the highest number of culture shocks. For example, Brits were stunned by the modesty and friendliness of strangers they encountered on the Irish Sea.

2. Shock related to the local food and drink. It's not just in the food, but also in the timing of meals. In Spain, for example, people tend to eat a lighter breakfast and eat later than in the UK.

3. Lifestyle. In Spain, kissing and talking loudly in public is surprising. And in Portugal, people are less punctual.

Of course, this fluctuates both ways, and Europeans often express surprise at the behaviour of Brits abroad.

MONEY EXCHANGE IN EUROPE

From April 2025, banknotes in denominations of 20 and 50 euros of the current format will be gradually withdrawn from circulation.

The European Central Bank (ECB) is launching a new banknote design based on the themes of "European Culture" and "Rivers and Birds". The new banknotes will feature images of famous personalities and natural landscapes.

The new banknotes will be released in 2026, and an ECB competition for artists and graphic designers from EU countries has now been announced. They will present their projects, which will be evaluated by both a professional jury and ordinary citizens through a public vote.

The final version of the new banknotes will be approved by the ECB Governing Council. The updated 20 and 50 euros are expected to enter circulation in 2026. They will combine modern design and a high degree of protection. The old banknotes will remain solvent, but over time they will be replaced by new ones.

🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿 How is April Fool's Day celebrated in Scotland?

Different European countries have been celebrating April 1 since the Middle Ages. And each has its own unique ways to prank its April Fools' victims.

The April Fool's Day celebrations in Scotland, which last two days, are much more fun. It's called Bark Day because the bark—or cuckoo—is a symbol of a fool. Because of this, some believe that April Fool's Day was originally associated with cuckolds. On the first day, people prank each other, and on the second — known as Tail Day — people attach tails to each other.

On April 1, the Scots say: Today is April fools' Day, don't believe anyone, don't believe anything, just like any other day.

The first of April is considered the official start of the tourist season. Since the beginning of April, many Scottish castles, distilleries and other attractions have been open to visitors. There are many activities and activities in Scotland that will make your trip especially vivid and memorable.

🇩🇪 Get naked or go away: swimsuits are banned on nudist beaches in Germany

If you want to avoid trouble during your next trip to Germany, pay attention to local laws.

In the Baltic city of Rostock, a new rule has been introduced that prohibits visitors from entering the beaches who refuse to undress in places specially designated for nudists.

The measure was taken in response to "numerous complaints from people who felt insulted in nudist areas," explained Moritz Naumann from Rostock's tourism department.

However, he stressed that this rule would apply only "in case of conflict."
This decision highlights an ongoing challenge: ensuring that nudist spaces remain comfortable for those who embrace this lifestyle.

The number of people practicing nudism is decreasing today," Naumann said, adding that as a result, the number of official nudist beach areas in Rostock has decreased from 37 to 27.

🇷🇺 St. Isaac's Cathedral is one of the symbols of the imperial city of St. Petersburg

The temple was consecrated in honor of St. Isaac of Dalmatia, the heavenly patron saint of Peter the Great. It is considered one of the most beautiful cathedrals, ranks fourth among the most magnificent domed structures in the world.

The construction of the cathedral began in 1818 and ended in 1858.

The architect of St. Isaac's Cathedral was the French young master Auguste Montferrand. The architect grew up and was educated in Paris, where after graduation he served in the General Department of Architecture of Paris and participated in the creation of the Church of Mary Magdalene.

The construction piles for its foundation went underground so quickly due to the swampiness of the soil that a joke began to spread around the city, as the mayor's office of New York sent a claim because of the damaged pavement, from under which piles with the stamp of a Russian factory
came out...

🇮🇹 Lost Hellas in Italy

Lost among the mountains of Calabria, the tiny village of Galliziano seemed to have fallen out of the stream of time. Here, among the narrow streets and stone houses, the ancient language still sounds, which is more reminiscent of the Greek of the Peloponnese than Italian.

Galliziano is called the "Acropolis of Calabria", and for good reason. Its streets preserve the memory of Great Greece, the era when the south of Italy was inhabited by the Hellenes.

You can still hear a dialect here that goes back to the 8th century BC. Greek speech sounds everywhere, as if in Byzantium, and the locals preserve the traditions of their ancestors.

Galliziano is not a tourist attraction, but a corner where time has stopped, but culture continues to live. And if you are looking for a place where you can touch antiquity, you are definitely here.

Young people use dumpsters instead of suitcases

An unusual trend originated in China: young people began to massively use dumpsters as an alternative to suitcases. Students explain that containers are more spacious and convenient for moving, especially during the beginning of the school year, when they have to transport a lot of things to their dormitories and colleges.

This trend is rapidly gaining popularity everywhere. In many large cities, dumpsters have already begun to disappear as students take them away.

Some of them approach the issue creatively: containers are customized, bright stickers are added, painted in unusual colors, and even equipped with handles or additional locks to adapt them to their needs.

Those who have managed to try out the "suitcase container", note the undeniable advantages. First of all, a container holds a lot more things than a suitcase or a bag. Secondly, thanks to the sturdy wheels, it is stable and easy to move, and the lid protects things from rain and dust.

🇵🇹 A wonderful city – a place of rest for emirs and kings

Just an hour and a half train ride from tourist Lisbon is Evora, a peaceful city with a population of about 40,000 people, hidden in the green depths of the Alentejo.

In Evora, you should take time to walk through the streets of the old town. Here you can feel the calm, but by no means lazy spirit of real Portugal, without the hustle and bustle of the city.

Apart from the Old Town, with its magnificent Gothic cathedral, whitewashed houses and cobblestones, Evora is famous for being the location of an ancient Roman temple. Because Portugal was once also under Roman rule.

In summer, it is very hot in Evora at the height of the day, so stock up on drinking water. Life in the city, including cultural sites, freezes somewhere from noon to three o'clock.
