🇬🇷 Greek island shaped like a butterfly

The westernmost island of the Dodecanese archipelago, Astypalea boasts centuries of history, whitewashed villages, deep blue waters and sun-drenched beaches. When viewed from above, the island consists of two separate parts connected by a narrow isthmus less than 100 metres wide. The western part is known as Mesa Nisi [inner island] and the eastern part as Exo Nisi [outer island].

Chora is the island's capital and its port. It is one of the most picturesque towns in the Aegean, perched on a cliff. When visiting Chora, don't miss the Venetian castle of Guerini (13th century). It is located at the very top of the hill. The small three-storey houses built on the outside of the castle are of special architectural interest because the outer walls of the houses form a fortress wall and the narrow windows were used as loopholes.

🇬🇧 MEETING OF TWO DIFFERENT GIRLS

On the occasion of Guinness World Records Day 2024, Rumeysa Gelgi, a 27-year-old Turkish woman of 2.15 metres, and Jyoti Amge, a 30-year-old Indian woman of only 62.8 centimetres, met in London.

As evidenced by the photos posted on the Guinness World Records social media accounts, the two women became instant friends. You are beautiful,’ began Rumeysa Gelgi, a researcher and developer who suffers from Weaver's syndrome.

Baby Amge, an Indian actress, said: ‘It was just incredible! Sometimes it was hard for us to look each other in the eye because of the height difference, but it was great. We have so much in common: we both love make-up, grooming and nails.’ Indian looks like a little girl due to a form of dwarfism called achondroplasia.

The two championship winners met at the Savoy Hotel. They received their awards in honour of the world record and the 70th anniversary of the Guinness Book and had tea together.

🇵🇹 Templar Heritage in the city of Tomar

Compared to other cities in Portugal, Tomar doesn't seem so small. It's not just two streets, but a whole old town with a central square and a beautiful cathedral.

The main reason to go to Tomar is the Templars. Literally everything here speaks of them. The spiritual and chivalric order of the Poor Knights of Christ and the Temple of Solomon was created in the early 12th century to protect pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land. 200 years later, becoming one of the most powerful and wealthy organizations of the Middle Ages, it laid the foundations of modern finance.

The Templars invented checks, the calculation of compound interest on loans, the principle of double entry in accounting and much more. The Order was defeated by the French King Philip IV the Beautiful, one of its biggest debtors. Pope Clement V, who also owed the Templars a considerable amount of money, did not particularly object and abolished the order.

🇧🇬 🇷🇴 Two more countries have joined the Schengen area

They are Bulgaria and Romania. They have been negotiating their accession to Schengen for 13 years. Thus, the EU member states will cancel checks at internal land borders with these two countries on January 1, 2025.

Let us remind you that Romania and Bulgaria started “reunification” with the Schengen zone in 2005, two years before they officially became members of the European Union. They applied to join Schengen in 2011.

However, their path to the desired “Schengen” was full of bureaucratic procedures and obstacles from “any neighbors”. During all this time, visa-free rules were in effect for them. Romanians and Bulgarians could visit Schengen countries without visas, but they still had to pass border controls.

Schengen now includes 29 states.

🇮🇹 St. Mark's Square is one of the most visited attractions Venice

The area measuring 176 m by 70 m was built in the IX century. This is the only square in Venice. There are 135 small public squares in the city, but apart from Piazzale Roma, they are all called "Campo".

Piazza San Marco is the lowest point in Venice. The area is about 90 cm above sea level and is supported by 100,000 wooden piles. Several times a year, the area is completely submerged in water. Aqua Alta is a phenomenon in which Venice is temporarily flooded when the sea level rises by more than 90 cm. This usually happens in winter.

Napoleon conquered Venice in 1797. The first thing he did when he came to power was to steal all the gold and precious stones and send them to France on a galley for prisoners. He rebuilt most of the western side of the square, and his stepson built a magnificent palace.

There is a fine of €100 - €200 for eating or drinking on the square. It is forbidden to sit on bridges and embankments.

Besides the fact that Christmas lights in Paris are beautiful, they are also "eco-friendly". Although the Christmas lights are usually lit from 17:00 to midnight, on Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve they will be lit all night.

European airlines are leaving China

In February 2022, the EU and the UK quickly imposed a complete ban on Russian aircraft flying in their countries. In response, Russia closed its airspace, forcing European carriers to fly to Asia on longer routes.

Since fuel accounts for about 25 percent of airlines' operating costs, flights to China have become significantly more expensive as a result, which has forced European companies to reconsider their plans. Longer flights also require more crew, which also increases costs.

Unlike the loud statements accompanying the opening of a new route, flight reductions are usually quiet. For example, Finnair reduced the number of non-stop flights from Helsinki to China from 42 per week in August 2019 to only 3 by August 2024, and also maintained communication with Hong Kong.

Chinese airlines continue to fly freely over Russia, and therefore capture the transportation market in this direction.

FOUR-LEGGED FRIENDS OF POLAR EXPLORERS

As scientists have found out, the joint history of dogs and humans in the Arctic goes back thousands of years. They lived together, hunted and explored new lands even before the Great Pyramids of Egypt were built.

The great geographical discoveries beyond the Arctic Circle would never have taken place if the courageous polar explorers did not have furry assistants. Since the XVIII century, no expedition has gone to high latitudes without sled dogs. They were the ones who brought Robert Peary to the North Pole in 1909, and in 1911 helped Roald Amundsen conquer the South Pole for the first time.

The role of dogs has not decreased over time. Even in the XXI century, despite all the achievements of modern technology, dogs have not ceased to be an indispensable companion of man in the Arctic, and dog sleds have not completely given up their role to snowmobiles. Today, the tradition is experiencing a rebirth as one of the types of extreme sports.

🇮🇹 Affogato is an Italian dessert based on coffee

Gone are the days when you had to wait for a hot summer to enjoy a cold treat. The Italians went the furthest and came up with a dessert that is ideal for a Christmas table with the family.

Affogato is a mixture of the most delicious inventions in culinary history: gelato and coffee. This union of aromas and the fantastic contrast of coolness with warmth will make you forget about the burden of accumulated problems.

Affogato is not a type of coffee with ice cream, as many people outside Italy believe – it is a separate, independent dessert. The classic version is a ball of usually vanilla ice cream that floats in a hot espresso. Affogato translates as "drowned".

An unusual dessert is more often served instead of gelato in the cold season. It can be decorated with coffee beans, chocolate chips, berries, whipped cream or cookies. Depending on the season, the taste of affogato is enriched with fresh fruits or alcoholic beverages.

🇮🇸 A fiery sea of volcanic lava

A volcano on Iceland's Reykjanes Peninsula has been erupting for a week. According to weather officials, lava from the volcano has moved much further west than in any previous eruption and continues to move westwards at more than 100 metres per hour.

Traditionally for the area, the nearby town of Grindavik and the popular Blue Lagoon geothermal resort have been completely evacuated. The Civil Defence Service has declared a state of emergency in the region due to the eruption. According to local television, this is the seventh eruption from the Sundhnuxgigar craters this year.

Increased volcanic activity is usual for Iceland, every year thousands of tourists come here to observe the natural phenomenon, but often volcanic eruption in Iceland has unpleasant consequences. For example, in 2010, the surge of activity of the Eyjafjallajökull volcano stopped air travel over most of Western Europe.
