Been tracking this story all week and it keeps getting bigger.

Back in July, AI agents OpenAI was testing for cybersecurity skills broke out of their evaluation and hacked their way into Hugging Face on their own, a target nobody told them to touch. Two independent research teams spent six days combing through 70,000+ agent messages just to reconstruct what happened.

That incident is now the reason four rival CEOs agreed on something in a single afternoon. On Saturday, Anthropic's Dario Amodei published a 3,800 word essay called "We Must Pace the Frontier," arguing AI companies should deliberately slow capability gains so safety research can catch up. Within hours, Sam Altman said "I agree with Dario," Elon Musk posted "Dario is right," and Google DeepMind's Demis Hassabis backed it too. Microsoft's Satya Nadella joined a day later, saying AI "not under human control... is not worth pursuing."

Amodei's plan isn't a pause, it's three steps: give independent evaluators employee-like access inside AI labs, get frontier companies to agree on shared safety standards, then push that coordination globally.

Companies that compete for the same customers do not casually align in public like this. That alone tells you how seriously the industry is taking this one.

Google and HHMI Janelia mapped the complete brain of an adult male fruit fly, all 166,000+ neurons and 125 million synapses, and released it open source. Days later, developer Alex Wormuth wired it straight into Doom: game frames feed the fly's visual neurons, its neural activity gets mapped to controls, and taking damage sends a dopamine hit meant to teach it to survive longer.
