The Centre on Monday (December 9, 2024) announced the appointment of Revenue Secretary Sanjay Malhotra as the 26th Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, a day before incumbent Governor Shaktikanta Das’s six-year term comes to an end on Tuesday (December 10, 2024).

A 1990-batch officer of the Indian Administrative Service of the Rajasthan cadre, Mr. Malhotra is a computer science engineering graduate from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kanpur, and has a Master’s degree in Public Policy from the Princeton University, U.S.A, and will take charge of the country’s monetary policy framework and banking regulation at Mint Street on December 11.

Correct Answer: Option (d)
► Context: Repeated incidents of Child deaths due to Indian manufactured cough/cold syrups and WHO alerts; Central Drugs Standard Control Organisation (CDSCO) data showing that at least 6% of cough syrup samples from 54 Indian manufacturers failed a mandatory quality test for export.
► WHO had issued a medical product alert for a batch of Guaifenesin Syrup (Guaifenesin is an expectorant used to relieve chest congestion and the symptoms of cough), manufactured by an Indian company. The analysis found that the product contained unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol as contaminants.
► Diethylene glycol and ethylene glycol are toxic to humans when consumed and can prove fatal. Toxic effects can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, inability to pass urine, headache, altered mental state and acute kidney injury which may lead to death. Their presence in cough/cold syrups is resulting in serious injury or death, especially in children. Hence Statement 1 and Statement 3 are correct.
► The acceptable safety limit for both ethylene glycol and diethylene glycol is no more than 0.10%. Hence Statement 2 is correct.
► Similar kind of issue also reported with COLD OUT syrup, where it was found to contain unacceptable amounts of diethylene glycol (0.25%) and ethylene glycol (2.1%) as contaminants.
