New York prison strike ends as 75% of officers return to work, officials say

Roughly 75% of corrections officers have returned to their posts, effectively ending a three-week wildcat strike that prompted lockdowns at facilities around the state, the head of the New York state prison system said.

New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision Commissioner Dan Martuscello said about 10,000 officers and sergeants had returned to work – including more than 1,200 on Monday. There were around 13,500 officers and sergeants working in the prison system before officers first walked off the job on Feb. 17.

Rubio announces that 83% of USAID contracts will be canceled

The Trump administration officially canceled 83% of U.S. foreign aid contracts on Monday. "The 5200 contracts that are now cancelled spent tens of billions of dollars in ways that did not serve, (and in some cases even harmed), the core national interests of the United States," Secretary of State Marco Rubio wrote on X early Monday morning.

The total number of contracts is about 6,200, representing programs that were appropriated by Congress in the last budget approval. Rubio said that the remaining 1,000 or so contracts would be administered by the State Department, which absorbed the U.S. Agency for international Development (USAID) last month.

City crews have begun painting over the 'Black Lives Matter' street mural in D.C.

Crews in Washington, D.C. have begun painting over the city's "Black Lives Matter" street mural, a notable symbol of the 2020 protests against the killing of George Floyd, after a Republican bill targeting the mural threatened city funding. The phrase "Black Lives Matter" had been painted in June 2020 on the pavement by the city in uppercase, yellow letters, covering two blocks on 16th Street, about a quarter mile from the White House.

In 2021, Mayor Muriel Bowser said the mural would become permanent to commemorate the protests. But last week, Rep. Andrew Clyde, R-Ga., introduced a bill calling for the city to paint over the mural and rename the area Liberty Plaza β€” or lose federal funds.

A single-engine plane crashes near a Pennsylvania airport, injuring 5 passengers

A single-engine airplane carrying five people crashed and burst into flames Sunday in the parking lot of a retirement community near a small airport in suburban Pennsylvania, and everyone on board survived, officials and witnesses said.

The fiery crash happened around 3 p.m. just south of Lancaster Airport in Manheim Township, police chief Duane Fisher told reporters at an evening briefing. All five victims were taken to hospitals in unknown condition. Nobody on the ground was hurt, the chief said.

Secret Service says it shot an armed man near the White House after a confrontation

A man who was brandishing a firearm in Washington, D.C., was shot by Secret Service officers near the White House on Sunday morning, the Secret Service said.
The man, who is thought to have travelled from Indiana, had been flagged to the Secret Service by local police as a potential suicide risk, according to the agency.

Officials came across the man's car, and found him nearby with a firearm, when an armed confrontation ensued, the Secret Service said. The man was transported to a nearby hospital, and his condition is so far unknown. No Secret Service personnel are thought to have been harmed.
