An increased level of impurity in the blood means you lose perception.

The level of perception that you have determines the quality of your life. How profound your perception is has always been the concern of this culture. If you think only if something is written in a book, it is true, it means you are superstitious and religious. There is nothing scientific about that. Obviously, a lunar eclipse does not mean that the moon quickly makes the twenty-eight days’ journey in a matter of a few hours – it is only covered by the shadow of the earth. It is like when it is night for us, the sun is still there but we are on the side of the earth that faces away from it. In your experience, does night only mean absence of light, or is there a phenomenal change in the very way life happens from day to night? If you just look at every insect, bird, animal, tree, or even a rock, you will see there is a difference. If you sit outside at night with a little openness, you will know it is not just about the absence of light.

There is a difference in quality between day and night. Someone may say, “This is all rubbish – there is just absence of light.” That is also what some people say about the eclipse. It doesn’t matter. I am saying, during the eclipse time, don’t cook food and eat. Eat well before or after. This is life sense, not internet science.

This is a Sadhguru – that means he knows life from within. That’s about it. I am for those who are interested in life. The greatest ignorance is to think that you are not ignorant. Whatever is not known to you cannot exist is the crown of ignorance. I request all the internet scientists, eat some fresh food, keep yourself healthy and perceptive to life. Eat during the eclipse if you wish. You won’t die – it is just that inertia will build up. If you don’t mind inertia, go ahead.

For those who are drinking alcohol, smoking cigarettes, and consuming whatever else, it may not make any difference. It is like if you take a high-performance car and fill it up with low octane petrol – your car may stop within a few kilometers. For high performance, you need special petrol. If you want to be high performance, you need to look carefully what kind of fuel goes into you. If you are a junk machine, eat whatever, drink whatever, live whichever way you want.

The nature of life is such that the earth, the sun, and the moon have a significant impact on the system. If you are conscious of their ways, you can ride these natural forces and make your life effortless and easy. If you are not conscious, these same cycles could crush you – everything will be a struggle. All the best till the next eclipse. Just don’t let your arrogance born of ignorance eclipse greater possibilities of life.

𝗣𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗲𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝗜𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗶𝗮 – 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗶𝗰𝗲𝗜𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗦𝗽𝗼𝘁.

Last week, some people were commenting on my suggestion not to have food during the lunar eclipse, calling it superstitious and unscientific. They said they had food and they did not die. I was wondering, were they disappointed? First of all, let us understand what superstition is. Superstition is to make conclusions without any perception about a certain subject. This is the nature of life: Your perception and experience of life depends on how sensitive you are.

Perception will not come through intellectual accumulation. If those who read a high school textbook think they are scientists, what can I say. A genuine scientist, who has probed into any aspect of life with a certain profoundness, will not speak like this.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐥𝐞𝐯𝐞𝐥 𝐨𝐟 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐞𝐩𝐭𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐭𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐝𝐞𝐭𝐞𝐫𝐦𝐢𝐧𝐞𝐬 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐪𝐮𝐚𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐥𝐢𝐟𝐞.

As a yogi, as far as possible, I will not consume anything more than an hour and a half after it has been cooked. Why we are serving the food the way we do in the ashram is because we are hoping that people will graduate from being yoga practitioners to yogis. Not just bending and twisting but beginning to feel the union in existence.

For this to happen, the body has to be sensitive, and it has to have the least possible level of inertia. If you eat food which has deteriorated in some way – it may not be rotten, nor will it kill you – it is just that it will lower your perception. In my experience of life, lowered perception is death. At least the death of the yogi. The man may live – the yogi will be dead if he loses his perception and his sensitivity. If the death of sensitivity does not matter to you, you can eat what you want; you can eat garbage and still survive.

People are eating food that was cooked days, weeks, or even months ago. If they don’t feel the difference between freshly cooked food and food that has been refrigerated for ages, what can you say. But for sure they do not have the sensitivity that I am talking about. This is what causes inertia. They may be sleeping eight to ten hours a day – that is death to me. Ten hours of sleep, that is over forty percent of death in twenty-four hours. So, if you wish to live like that, you can eat whatever you want.

I am not a scientist, nor do I wish to be one. Neither am I reading books, nor am I researching anything, nor do I have a lab in my backyard. I just pay attention to this human mechanism that is me. I keep it in a certain way, which takes a lot of work. And for anything that happens in nature, I observe what is happening with me, and that is what I am speaking about. I am also observing life around me, for confirmation. Every insect, worm, bird, animal, tree is saying the same thing. If you are only going to discover this after many years and a few billion dollars of research, it is up to you.

𝐈𝐟 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐰𝐚𝐧𝐭 𝐭𝐨 𝐛𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐠𝐡 𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐦𝐚𝐧𝐜𝐞, 𝐲𝐨𝐮 𝐧𝐞𝐞𝐝 𝐭𝐨 𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐜𝐚𝐫𝐞𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲 𝐰𝐡𝐚𝐭 𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐨𝐟 𝐟𝐮𝐞𝐥 𝐠𝐨𝐞𝐬 𝐢𝐧𝐭𝐨 𝐲𝐨𝐮.

Some so-called scientists do not have anything to do with real science. A scientist who has looked at something with profoundness will not speak this way. It is just that there are “internet scientists” who think they know every science, because they are on the internet. Something as simple as realizing that alcohol, tobacco, and red meat are bad for your health took so many years and billions of dollars of research. What is a recent discovery for them has been an eternal wisdom for us.

For example, I was in conversation with an Indian-origin doctor in the United States, who is credited with discovering how the atrium functions in sucking back blood to the heart. When I saw his videos and scientific papers, I could not believe that until a few years ago, the medical science did not know that. The yogic system has always focused on that. In yoga, we are interested in our blood being as pure as possible.

If the basic aspects of the temple – the size and shape of the idol, the mudra that the idol holds, the parikrama, the garbha griha, and the mantras used to consecrate the idol are properly matched, a powerful energy system is created.

In Indian tradition, no one told you that if you go to a temple, you must worship and give money and ask for something. This is something that people have started now. Traditionally, they told you, if you go to the temple, you must sit for a while and come. But today you just touch your bottom to the floor and run away. This is not the way. You are required to sit there because there is a field of energy that has been created. In the morning, before you go out into the world, the first thing you do is you go sit in the temple for a while. This is a way of recharging yourself with very positive vibrations of life so that you go into the world with a different perspective. The temple was not created as a place of God or a place of prayer. No one was ever allowed to lead a prayer. It was created as a place of energy where everyone could go and make use of it.

𝗜𝗱𝗼𝗹𝘀 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗛𝗶𝗻𝗱𝘂 𝗪𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗳 𝗟𝗶𝗳𝗲 – 𝗪𝗵𝘆 𝗔𝗿𝗲 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘆 𝗪𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱?

Sadhguru looks at the worship of idols in the Hindu way of life, and explains that they are not merely depictions of gods, but are scientifically created as powerful energy centers.

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: India is one place where they went into elaborate systems of idol-making. This has been misunderstood by other cultures as worshiping some doll as a god. No. Here, people are very much aware that it is we who create the shapes and forms. If you look at it from the standpoint of modern science, we know today that everything is the same energy, but everything is not the same in the world. This energy can be like an animal or this energy can function like the Divine. When I say “the Divine,” I am not talking about you as a being. I am talking about the body itself. The physical body itself can be transformed into a Divine entity if we just reorganize our systems in a particular way.

For example, between the full moon day and the new moon day, each of the fourteen nights are so different. Today, we live with so much electric light, so you don't know the difference. Suppose you lived on a farm or in a forest where there was no electricity, then every night would be very different because the moon comes up at different times and it has different shapes and forms. But it is the same moon. It is not a different entity. The same moon has different impacts at different times. Just a little rearrangement, see what a difference it has made.

Similarly, if you re-arrange the energy system in the body, this body which is just a mass of flesh right now, can become a divine entity. The whole system of yoga is oriented towards this. Gradually, if you give it sufficient attention and practice, you will see that this body is no longer just craving for self-preservation and procreation, it has become something else altogether. It is no longer just a physical entity. Though it is physical, though it is biology, it need not be limited to the physical. It can function and operate in a completely different dimension. Its very presence can become different. It is from this context that many yogis who made their bodies in a certain way, allowed people to worship their bodies. They themselves would not be there in the body, but they let people worship their body because it has become like a divine entity. It is a reorganized energy – completely engineered.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐇𝐢𝐧𝐝𝐮 𝐖𝐚𝐲 𝐨𝐟 𝐋𝐢𝐟𝐞

One fundamental thing that I would like to clear up about the Hindu way of life is, with the Hindu, there is no “ism” because it is a geographical and cultural identity. Anyone born in the land of Indus is a Hindu. There is no particular belief system, god or ideology which you can call as the Hindu way of life. Whatever you do in this culture is Hindu. You can worship a man-god and be a Hindu. You can worship a woman-god and be a Hindu. You can worship a cow and be a Hindu. You can worship a tree and be a Hindu. Or you don’t worship anything and you can be a Hindu. Hindu is a cultural identity, not a religious identity. In the Hindu way of life, the only important thing in human life is his liberation. Mukti is the only goal.

𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐒𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐞 𝐨𝐟 𝐈𝐝𝐨𝐥-𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐢𝐧𝐠

There is a whole science of idol-making where a certain form is created with a particular material and energized in a certain way. Different idols are made in different ways where they relocate or rearrange the chakras in certain places to make them into completely different possibilities. Idol-making is that science through which you manifest the energy in a particular way so that your quality of life can be enhanced.

Temples in India, were built as a very deep science. They were not created for worship. When I say temple, I am referring to the ancient temples. Most modern temples are built just the way you build shopping complexes. Temple building is a very deep science.

We want to preserve the potatoes; otherwise we will again be ignorant fools who do the same things all over again. The value of life’s experience cannot be thrown away. But if you let it grow into you, then it just poisons your whole life. Karma, or the memory of experience, is the only thing which can bring wisdom to you, but it is also the only thing which can bind you - can so heavily poison your life that it can destroy you. So, karma is not the problem; how you carry it is the only problem.

𝗨𝗻𝗵𝗮𝗽𝗽𝘆 𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗖𝗼𝗺𝗽𝘂𝗹𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀?

Are you unhappy with your compulsions? Sadhguru explains how that won’t help while trudging through the loads of Karma which grows more if you bury it.

𝙌𝙪𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙞𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙧: Sadhguru, I am not happy with the fact that compulsions have been popping up as I am doing my sadhana.

𝙎𝙖𝙙𝙝𝙜𝙪𝙧𝙪: You must learn to be happy with your compulsions. Anyway you have the compulsion. If you are not happy with it, now you have two problems - compulsion and unhappiness! Already you have one problem, don’t create the next one. At least if you have one problem, it is easier to deal with it.

Unhappiness is unpleasantness. Why we are always talking about joy and love is to keep your mind and emotions pleasant. When these are pleasant, you are flexible and we can do many things with you. When your mind and your emotions are unpleasant, you become rigid;  nothing can be done about you. If you are in a state of pleasantness, you are willing to be molded into a different shape. When you are in a state of unpleasantness, you are not even willing to be touched.

𝐋𝐨𝐨𝐤 𝐀𝐭 𝐘𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐮𝐥𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧𝐬 𝐉𝐨𝐲𝐟𝐮𝐥𝐥𝐲

Unhappiness is a bigger problem than whatever compulsions you have. It is a far bigger problem because now you cannot be touched, molded or helped. Whatever nonsense you are, the first thing is to learn to be joyful and loving. You have your compulsions - just learn to look at them joyfully. Then it will be easy to work with you, help you, reach out to you - to do things with you beyond your likes and dislikes. Your likes and dislikes are the most basic compulsions; if we have to help you out of these, you have to be in a pleasant state. If you are in an unpleasant state, we cannot make you do something that you do not like; you will do only what you like. The more unhappy people are, the more they will insist, “I will do only this. This is how I am!” Joyful people are flexible - you can make them dance, you can make them cry, you can make them jump, you can make them do funny things, you can ask them to crawl around; they will do everything when they are happy. They are flexible.
Don’t lose your flexibility. That is most important. Flexibility is not possible when you are in any state of unpleasantness, either in the mind or in the emotion. Being joyful, loving and peaceful is important only for this reason - because you have many compulsions.

𝐊𝐚𝐫𝐦𝐚 𝐏𝐨𝐭𝐚𝐭𝐨𝐞𝐬

Karma is like a sack of potatoes. The deeper you bury these compulsions, the more they will grow. Sadhana is to pull them out and dry them in such a way that they cannot grow again. If you put yourself through a period of intense sadhana, you will see that when you go out in the world, so many of your simple compulsions are gone. But still there are a lot of potatoes to pull out. Every day you need to pull them out and dry them to such a point where they cannot sprout again.

If the same potato grows into a million, that is an exaggerated potato. Let us say you have five minutes of intense experience - of pain, fear, some torturous experience or something which was abhorrent to you. In these five minutes of potatoes, they will multiply and multiply and rule your whole life. Wherever you go, that is what you will talk about, what you think about. You buried them and they are multiplying. They will become millions of potatoes of the same abhorrent kind. Now if you dry this potato and keep it there, it is a good experience. Even if you went through a really bad experience, it is a good experience because what you learn through unpleasant moments in your life is invaluable. Only a fool will try to forget. If you are smart, you must always remember every unpleasant experience you have had - without resentment or anger - so that you never ever get into the same situations again. We don’t want to get rid of the potatoes; we just want to pull out the potatoes and dry them in such a way that they cannot sprout.
