About 3 dozen high-rise buildings in South Florida are sinking, a study finds

Almost three dozen high-rise condos and luxury hotels along the beach in South Florida are sinking or settling in unexpected ways, in some cases because of nearby construction, according to a new study.

The 35 buildings surveyed along an almost 12-mile stretch from Miami Beach to Sunny Isles Beach have sunk or settled by 0.8 to 3.1 inches. About half of the buildings are less than a decade old, according to scientists at the University of Miami Rosenstiel School of Marine, Atmospheric, and Earth Science. The study was published Friday.

Teamsters say thousands of workers at Amazon could strike Thursday

The Teamsters union says thousands of workers at Amazon plan to strike beginning Thursday morning, as they seek better pay, safer conditions and longer breaks.

The union says workers in New York City, Atlanta, California and Illinois are joining the picket line. Warehouse workers and drivers at other facilities are prepared to strike, as well. The strike comes amid a key shopping period, but there has been no word on how long the strike is expected to last.

Bird flu update: California declares emergency and U.S. sees 1st severe human case

California Gov. Gavin Newsom has declared a state of emergency in response to the ongoing spread of bird flu among dairy cattle. The declaration is a sign of growing concern over the situation in California, which has become the epicenter of the nation's outbreak in cattle.

More than 300 dairy herds have tested positive in California in the last 30 days alone. The governor said that cases detected in dairy cows on farms in Southern California showed that expanded monitoring and a more coordinated statewide response is needed in response to the outbreak.

Teacher Killed During Abundant Life School Shooting Was A Substitute For Educator On Vacation

In Madison, Wisconsin, 15-year-old Natalie Rupnow opened fire at Abundant Life Christian School, killing a substitute teacher, a student, and injuring five others before taking her own life. The substitute teacher, who was covering for a regular educator, died protecting the students. Authorities have not yet released the victims' identities or a motive for the attack. Rupnow was described as isolated and quiet, with reports that she mentioned visiting the nurse before the shooting.

U.S. to pay $116M settlement over rampant sexual abuse at Calif. women's prison

The U.S. government will pay nearly $116 million to resolve lawsuits brought by more than 100 women who say they were abused or mistreated at a now-shuttered federal prison in California that was known as the "rape club" because of rampant staff-on-inmate sexual misconduct.

Under settlements approved Tuesday, the Justice Department will pay an average of about $1.1 million to each of 103 women who sued the Bureau of Prisons over their treatment at the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, California.

The president of the NCAA calls for a ban on 'prop bets' in college sports

The president of the NCAA appeared on Capitol Hill Tuesday to express support for some federal regulations around sports gambling — including a ban on a type of wager known as "prop bets" in college sports.

In the six years since the U.S. Supreme Court paved the way for legal sports gambling across the U.S., harassment and abuse directed at student-athletes has grown, said Charlie Baker, speaking to members of the Senate Judiciary Committee. Proposition bets, or prop bets, are a wager in which a bettor gambles on something besides a game's final outcome — such as whether a certain player will score, or how many assists they log. Such bets on college sports are currently allowed in about 20 states, or roughly half of those that have legalized sports gambling.

Luigi Mangione is charged with murder as an act of terrorism in CEO's death

The man accused of killing UnitedHealthcare's CEO has been charged with murder as an act of terrorism, prosecutors said Tuesday as they worked to bring him to a New York court from from a Pennsylvania jail. Luigi Mangione already was charged with murder in the Dec. 4 killing of Brian Thompson, but the terror allegation is new.

Under New York law, such a charge can be brought when an alleged crime is "intended to intimidate or coerce a civilian population, influence the policies of a unit of government by intimidation or coercion and affect the conduct of a unit of government by murder, assassination or kidnapping."
