President Donald Trump sanctions International Criminal Court | BBC News

US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order sanctioning the International Criminal Court, accusing it of "illegitimate and baseless actions targeting America and our close ally Israel".

The measure places financial and visa restrictions on individuals and their families who assist in ICC investigations of American citizens or allies.

Trump signed the measure as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was visiting Washington.

Last November, the ICC issued an arrest warrant for Netanyahu over alleged war crimes in Gaza, which Israel denies.

Hottest January on record puzzles climate scientists | BBC News

Last month was the world's warmest January on record and it has raised further questions about the pace of climate change, scientists said.

January 2025 had been expected to be slightly cooler than January 2024 because of a shift away from a natural weather pattern in the Pacific known as El Niño.

But instead, last month broke the January 2024 record by nearly 0.1C, according to the European Copernicus climate service.

The world's warming is due to emissions of planet-heating gases from human activities - mainly the burning of fossil fuels - but scientists said they cannot fully explain why last month was particularly hot.

Trump restates plan for US ‘takeover’ of Gaza, with Palestinians ‘resettled in region’ | BBC News

US President Donald Trump has restated his plan for a US “takeover” of the Gaza Strip, after his idea was rejected by Palestinians and leaders around the world on Wednesday.

On social media, Trump said Gaza "would be turned over to the United States by Israel at the conclusion of fighting".

Palestinians "would have already been resettled in far safer and more beautiful communities, with new and modern homes, in the region," he added.

Waitangi Day: Thousands gather in New Zealand with Māori rights in focus | BBC News

Thousands of people have attended events in Waitangi, in northern New Zealand, to celebrate the country's national day amid a debate over the future of its founding document.

Waitangi Day marks the first signing of New Zealand's Treaty of Waitangi or Te Tiriti o Waitangi in Māori between the British Crown and Māori chiefs in 1840.

Prime Minister Christopher Luxon - who attended an event in the South Island - described the day as an opportunity to reflect on New Zealand's past as it charts its future.

But this year's events come at a time of increased tensions, as the government pursues policies considered by some to be anti-Māori.

Can US President Donald Trump really 'take over' Gaza? | BBC News

US President Donald Trump's proposal to resettle Gaza's population would only be temporary, Secretary of State Marco Rubio has said.

It follows Trump's suggestion that the US could "take over" Gaza and resettle around two million Palestinians living there – an idea that has drawn criticism from the UN, human rights groups and Arab leaders.

White House spokeswoman Karoline Leavitt further clarified Trump's comments, saying the US was not planning to put "boots on the ground" in the territory.

What are the war crimes allegations against Israel and Hamas? | BBC News

Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu is the first foreign leader to meet with President Trump since his inauguration.

The visit comes despite the International Criminal Court (ICC) issuing arrest warrants for Benjamin Netanyahu in November 2024 as well as Israel's former Minister of Defence Yoav Gallant.

Hamas leaders have also faced war crimes allegations, including arrest warrants from the ICC.

Israel and Hamas have denied the allegations, and those against Israel are rejected by the US.

It’s been over a year since some of the allegations were made. This explainer recaps on who’s making the accusations, what evidence they have, and the latest on legal proceedings.

On trade with Britain, he said "The UK is out of line. But I'm sure that one, I think that one, can be worked out."

Swedish police give update on school shooting where 10 killed | BBC News

Swedish police have given an update on the mass shooting that happened on a school campus in Orebro on Tuesday.

Ten people, plus the gunman, were killed. Police say they are still trying to work out the gunman's motive, the attacker was unknown to police - they did not say if he had gun licences.

The shooting happened in Orebro, a city 200km (124 miles) west of Stockholm, at a school for adults on a site that also taught children - six school buildings, plus a restaurant, were locked down during the attack.

It is the worst school shooting ever to happen in Sweden, where school violence is rare.

President Donald Trump says he wants US to 'take over' Gaza and resettle Palestinians | BBC News

US President Donald Trump says he wants the US to "take over" Gaza, take a "long-term ownership position", and turn it into the "Riviera of the Middle East".

At a White House news conference with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, he said: "The US will take over the Gaza Strip, and we will do a job with it too. We'll own it".

Trump also said Palestinians could be resettled away from Gaza, "in areas where the leaders currently say no".

Jordan and Egypt reject the idea of Palestinians being resettled - while the Palestinian ambassador to the UN says "our homeland is our homeland".

At least 10 dead in worst mass shooting in Sweden’s history | BBC News

Swedish police have said at least 10 people have been killed and five others wounded in a campus shooting in the city of Örebro

Police said investigating officers were in the process of identifying victims. They believe that a man they said was the “primary perpetrator” of the attack was among the dead.

The authorities said there was no warning of the attack which took place on a campus housing an adult education centre. They believe the gunman was acting alone. His motive is unknown but is not believed to be terror-related.

Clive Myrie presents BBC News at Ten reporting by Ellie Price and Katarina Folkeson.

Are President Trump and President Xi about to turn tariffs into a trade war? | BBC Newscast

In this episode of Newscast, we look at what could be the start of a trade war between the US and China.

After postponing tariffs on Canada and Mexico, President Trump has introduced a 10% tax on all goods imports from China. Early this morning Beijing announced it would impose a retaliatory 10% levy, albeit on fewer products.

Adam is joined by Laura Bicker, the BBC’s China Correspondent and Cindy Yu from the Spectator’s Chinese Whispers podcast.

Plus, Adam speaks to journalist Ben Westhoff about the fentanyl crisis in America and why President Trump had cited it as the reason behind raising taxes on Mexican, Canadian and Chinese goods.
