Climate change: Carbon dioxide rises more than ever in 2024 | BBC News

Levels of the most significant planet-warming gas in our atmosphere rose more quickly than ever previously recorded last year, scientists have said.

Concentrations of carbon dioxide (CO2) are now more than 50% higher than before humans started burning large amounts of fossil fuels.

Last year, fossil fuel emissions were at record highs, while the natural world struggled to absorb as much CO2 due to factors including wildfires and drought, so more accumulated in the atmosphere.

The rapid increase in CO2 is "incompatible" with the international pledge to try to limit global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels, the Met Office said.

Donald Trump's inauguration moved indoors due to 'dangerous' cold | BBC News

President-elect Donald Trump's inaugural address on 20 January will take place indoors due to dangerously cold weather being forecast next week in Washington, he has confirmed.

The address, as well as other speeches, will now take place inside the US Capitol's rotunda, rather than outside the building.

The inaugural parade will also be held indoors at Washington's Capitol One Arena, along with all three inaugural balls.

The last president to be sworn-in indoors was Ronald Reagan in 1985, when cold weather also plagued the US Capitol.

Archaeologists make ‘once-in-a-century’ discovery at Pompeii | BBC News

A "once-in-a-century" find has been unearthed in Pompeii after lying hidden for more than 2,000 years.

Archaeologists discovered a private bathhouse - potentially the largest ever found there - complete with hot, warm and cold rooms, exquisite artwork, and even a huge plunge pool.

The skeletons of a woman and a man were found in the house - the former discovered clutching a bag of coins and jewellery.

They had barricaded themselves into a small room, but were killed as a tsunami of superheated volcanic gas and ash - known as a pyroclastic flow - ripped through the town.

TikTok faces ban in US by Sunday after Supreme Court rejects appeal | BBC News

A TikTok ban in the US is set to go ahead on Sunday after the Supreme Court rejected an appeal, ruling that the law passed by Congress asking the app's Chinese owner to sell its stake did not violate free speech rights.

The legal drama stems from the US government's national security concerns and TikTok's ties to China. Last year, ByteDance was ordered to sell the app to a US buyer or it would be banned by 19 January - that sale has not yet happened.

TikTok is one of the most popular short-form video apps in the world, and is a major part of a multi-billion dollar influencer economy.

Ex-Pakistan PM Imran Khan jailed for 14 years in corruption case | BBCNews

Former Pakistani Prime Minister Imran Khan has been sentenced to 14 years in prison over a corruption case, in the latest of a series of charges laid against him.

It is the longest valid jail sentence the cricket star-turned-politician, who has been detained since August 2023, has received.

He has faced charges in over 100 cases, ranging from leaking state secrets to selling state gifts - all of which he has denounced as politically motivated.

The latest case has been described by Pakistani authorities as the largest the country has seen.

Russia jails lawyers who acted for late opposition leader Alexei Navalny | BBC News

Three lawyers who acted for late Russian opposition leader Alexei Navalny have been sentenced on charges of taking part in an "extremist organisation".

Vadim Kobzev, Igor Sergunin and Alexei Liptser were arrested in October 2023 as Russian authorities intensified pressure on the jailed Kremlin critic, who died suddenly in February in an Arctic prison colony.

They were put on trial behind closed doors in Petushki, a town east of Moscow, and accused of "using their status" to relay messages between Navalny and his colleagues.

They’ve been given jail terms of up to five-and-a-half years.

Israeli PM confirms Gaza hostage release deal agreed | BBC News

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has confirmed a Gaza ceasefire deal has been agreed with Hamas, after overcoming last-minute disputes.

Mr Netanyahu's security cabinet is meeting now to vote on the deal, and then the government will have to approve it.

He said if all finalised, the first hostages "are expected to be released as early as Sunday".

The civil defence agency in Gaza said at least 80 Palestinians have been killed in Israeli strikes since the deal was first announced, with Israel’s military saying it had hit more than 50 targets across the territory.

Israel kills dozens in Gaza airstrikes despite ceasefire deal | BBC News

Israeli air strikes are continuing in Gaza ahead of the ceasefire agreement and hostage deal with Hamas, which comes into effect on Sunday, subject to the Israeli cabinet's approval.

The strikes killed 73 people overnight following the announcement of the deal, Gaza's Hamas-run civil defence agency reported. Victims include 12 people living in a residential block in the Sheikh Radwan neighbourhood of Gaza City, the health ministry said.

Israel has previously launched air strikes in the run-up to ceasefire arrangements taking effect, most recently in Lebanon, where the capital Beirut suffered heavy bombing hours before a ceasefire came into force in November 2024.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had been expected to confirm the ceasefire deal in parliament but his office claimed Hamas has "reneged" on parts of the agreement, prompting a "last-minute crisis".

Two hardline right-wing ministers, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and National Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, have long threatened to leave Mr Netanyahu’s government coalition if the ceasefire goes ahead.

South Korean President Yoon Suk Yeol refuses to answer questions after arrest | BBC News

South Korea’s President Yoon Suk Yeol has refused to take part in a second day of questioning in a criminal trial into his attempt to impose martial law.

He was arrested on January 15 on charges of insurrection for a failed martial law order on 3 December that plunged the country into turmoil.

Lawyers for the president said he would not take part in any further questioning due to ill health.

Meanwhile the constitutional court is holding a hearing to decide whether to permanently remove him from office or reinstate his powers.
