CRICKET CON: How 🇮🇳 village staged FAKE IPL to dupe online bettors🏏 In June 2022, in the village of Molipur, Gujarat, a seemingly professional cricket match captivated dozens of spectators.
▪️However, this was no ordinary village match: the players wore proper uniforms, protective pads, and gloves, and they played with a hard leather ball, just like in professional games.
▪️A metal tower was installed for a camera operator and a small corrugated metal room equipped with a computer and monitors for live streaming on YouTube.
▪️The players, hired for 400 rupees a day, were ordinary villagers. The match was organised by a local resident named Shoaib Davda.
▪️There was, however, a catch: the players had to follow the umpire's instructions. One player revealed that the umpire directed the batsman and bowler, telling them exactly when and what to do.
▪️ The entire staged match was streamed online, with viewers placing bets as though it were a legitimate championship featuring seasoned players!
👮♂️ On 7 July, the police raided the field and arrested Davda. Messages found on the suspects’ phones revealed communication with people giving instructions on how to manipulate the game. It turned out the matches were part of a
fraudulent online betting scheme, where viewers were allowed to bet on the outcomes of the staged games.
👉 Further investigation revealed this was not an isolated incident. Similar fake matches were being staged and live-streamed from Russia, where individuals impersonated cricketers to mimic tournaments. The scam extended across India, Pakistan, and Bangladesh, with fraudulent betting operations raking in money.
