PAKISTAN'S EMPTY PROMISES ON NORTHERN CYPRUSCyprus remains one of the world’s most explosive territorial disputes, with 🇹🇷Turkey-backed Northern 🇨🇾Cyprus still recognized only by Türkiye.
▪️But in 1983, after Northern Cyprus declared independence, Pakistan and 🇧🇩Bangladesh initially supported it — only to backtrack under international pressure.
▪️Fast forward to 2023 — during the
visit of Erdogan to Pakistan, Pakistan's PM Shehbaz Sharif said that he 'fully supports the cause of northern Cyprus,' yet no official recognition followed.
But what’s the real beef over Cyprus?▪️Cyprus, located 550 km east of Crete and 65 km south of Türkiye, has been home to 🇬🇷Greeks since 1100 BC, with large-scale Turkish settlement beginning in 1571 after the Ottoman conquest. For centuries, Greeks, Turks, 🇦🇲Armenians, and Maronites coexisted peacefully in mixed communities.
▪️Everything changed when 🇬🇧Britain took control in 1878. Instead of fostering unity, the British exploited ethnic divisions, imposing a governance system that fueled tensions.
▪️When Cyprus gained independence in 1960, Greek Cypriots (77% of the population) and Turkish Cypriots (18%) inherited a deeply flawed system left behind by the British, setting the stage for disaster.
▪️By 1974,
Britain’s colonial mess erupted into full-blown chaos. A Greek-backed coup led to Türkiye’s invasion of northern Cyprus, displacing 220,000 people and splitting the island.
