“What the superior man seeks is in himself; what the small man seeks is in others.”

Confucius

Superior man is the wise, courteous and honourable person with greater compassion, strength and willpower.

Being the man of wisdom, he tends to look deep inside him, understand his true self and then to the outer world for more understanding.

Neither does he need the applause from people nor seek their approval to be happy.

However, a person of inferior thinking always seeks applause and approval from others, runs long just to find in others what he has in himself.

Every time you seek validation from others to be yourself, you are giving away your power disapproving your own existence.

Deep inside us is the enlightenment which is the source of happiness and fulfillment in life and has the power to change the world.

After overcoming adversities in one's life, people get to understand the value of time. Facing a significant challenge, such as a serious illness, financial crisis, or personal loss, can lead to a reevaluation of life. Surviving these hardships may bring about a profound realisation of the fragility of life and the importance of making the most of the time one has. On the similar lines are the aspects of Personal Growth and Development where an individual who actively pursues personal growth and self-discovery may experience a gradual realisation of a "second life." This can come from learning experiences, self-reflection, and a commitment to continuous improvement, leading to a more intentional and fulfilling life. Incidents from the life of Buddha tells that self- realisation and introspection help individuals realise their goals and attributes.

Story of Falguni Nayar

Anecdote: In 2012, Falguni Nayar left her successful investment banking career at 50 to start Nykaa with $2 million and a vision to make quality beauty products accessible to Indian women. From her father’s small office, she meticulously studied consumer behavior, onboarded trusted brands, and built a seamless online platform despite skepticism. Her efforts paid off when Nykaa became India’s first woman-led unicorn in 2020, valued at $2.3 billion. Today, as one of India’s two self-made female billionaires, Nayar’s journey exemplifies resilience, proving that success has no age limit and dreams are worth pursuing.

Ignorance, defined as the lack of knowledge or awareness, can lead to significant negative consequences.
It perpetuates misconceptions, fuels prejudices, and fosters an environment where fear and superstition thrive.
Historical examples, such as the persecution of scientists during the Dark Ages or the spread of misinformation in modern times, illustrate how ignorance can hinder progress and cause widespread harm.
The Black Death pandemic decimated Europe's population, killing an estimated 25-30 million people is a notorious example in case. The lack of knowledge regarding hygiene and disease vectors contributed to the rapid and devastating spread of the plague, highlighting the catastrophic consequences of medical ignorance.

In the dark, where shadows dwell,
Lies a tale that wisdom tells.
In the heart, a light to kindle,
In the mind, a star to twinkle.
Sensitivity, a beacon bright,
Guides us through the darkest night.
With empathy, our paths we pave,
In a world we seek to save.
Together, in light, we unite and strive,
To make the world more alive.

Why do I think I secured 149 in essay paper

1) The topics I selected were selected by only a few
>> Poets are the unacknowledged legislators of this world
>> A smile is the chosen vehicle for all ambiguities

2) I tried to write as many relevant examples as possible. For eg in the 1st essay I wrote about both foreign and Indian poets such as - Wordsworth, Auden' theory of agape and eros, our very on Kabir and his dohas which had social overtones. Tried to quote a few lines too.

3) Right at the onset I mentioned my interpretation of the topic. Thereafter, my attempt was to expand the same and cover as many dimensions as possible.

4) Did not stick to any template for essay. I personally believe that essays should be free flowing.

5) Tried to start and end on a high. Quote or anecdotes etc

A thumb rule that I follow- Whatever one has experienced in life, whatever one has read or heard, all of that could be used in an essay. Its the only paper where there is no fixed syllabus. It is where you can express yourself. Use that opportunity to the fullest. But be sure that you only mention relevant things. No point in beating around the bush.

Important Note: The reason why I selected those topics was because I was extremely comfortable in them. Not because I thought that they would be less chosen. This is an important point of difference. Whatever you feel you are comfortable with and can write with conviction, go for that.

I was very fortunate ke mujhe aise topics mil Gaye Jahan mee jee bhar ke likh paaya.

P.S. The post reflects author’s personal views only.

Adversity tests a person’s resilience, but power truly reveals the depth of their character. The way individuals exercise power reflects their core values, ethics, and humanity. Lessons from history, psychology, and philosophy highlight the significance of bearing power and authority responsibly. The true measure of a person is not in their ability to endure hardship but in their capacity to manage privilege and influence with integrity. As society grapples with the challenges of power, it becomes crucial to cultivate leaders who not only overcome adversity but also wield power with wisdom, humility, empathy, and a commitment to the greater good, fostering trust and progress for all.

According to the Power Paradox theory, as people gain power, they often lose empathy and become less attuned to the perspectives of others. This loss of empathy can lead to unethical decision-making, highlighting how power tests an individual’s capacity for self-awareness and restraint. For example, many politicians, after rising to significant power, lose touch with the needs of the people they represent. Cases of corruption and authoritarian behavior among certain leaders highlight how gaining power can sometimes diminish empathy and accountability. This underscores the importance of self-awareness and restraint in wielding authority responsibly, as seen in ethical leaders like Dr. A.P.J. Abdul Kalam, who remained humble and focused on public welfare despite holding a position of great power. Another example is Nelson Mandela who spent 27 years imprisoned during apartheid, enduring immense suffering, yet, he emerged with a spirit of reconciliation instead of seeking revenge. His response to adversity showcased his steadfast commitment to justice and peace, cementing his legacy as a global symbol of resilience.
