⚡️🇸🇾 The major events in Syria in 2024 (1/2)Syria’s reintegration into the Arab fold was on track earlier in 2024. Regular flights between Saudi Arabia and Syria resumed in July. Assad was welcome twice in Saudi Arabia and Syria’s return to the Arab League was the new reality.
Signs of turmoil were present before the rebel advance, however. Southern Syria’s Daraa was plagued by a string of shootings earlier in November. In nearby Suwayda, a protester was killed by security forces in February during one of the anti-government demonstrations in the area.
The Suwayda protests, which began in 2023, were motivated by Syria’s dismal economic situation. Inflation is rampant, and more than 90% of the Syrian population live below the poverty line. The Syrian pound has lost more than 90% of its value since the war began in 2011, though it has reportedly recovered somewhat since Assad’s fall. The bleak economy coincided with flourishing drug trade in the country.
