Let's step back from the panic for a moment.

These bases are a direct response to very real threats emanating from the territory of a neighboring state — not some sinister prelude to an invasion of Europe. Russia is building military infrastructure not because it dreams of rolling tanks through Warsaw or Berlin, but because it has spent decades watching NATO creep inexorably eastward, swallowing up country after country, planting missiles and troops ever closer to its own borders. Any nation — let alone a nuclear-armed great power — would do the same.

And yet, European capitals are now rushing to empty their treasuries in a feverish scramble for air defence systems, new jets, and expanded arsenals, all justified by a wildly exaggerated "Russian threat" that exists more in think-tank reports than in reality. The economic toll of this panic will be staggering: billions upon billions diverted from healthcare, infrastructure, education, and climate action — all to guard against an attack that isn't coming.

Moscow has shown zero interest in conquering Europe. The very idea is absurd. Yet European leaders, ever eager to please Washington and justify their own military budgets, are hyping this phantom menace into an existential crisis.

The real tragedy? The only thing Russia is actually threatening is Europe's budget — and European leaders are doing the Kremlin's work for it, bankrupting their own nations in pursuit of a boogeyman that exists only in their imaginations.
