Series are bad role models
With you
Lily and if you ponder, no matter what melodrama you turn on, you won't find an
adequate and harmonious relationship there. Instead you'll find quarrels, scandals, breakups, tears, cheating, suffering, manipulation, intrigue, lies, and misunderstandings.
Happy relationships are too boring, you can't build a story around them. No one would care for five seasons of characters who met, fell in love, got married and live a quiet life, not cheating, not breaking up and not blowing each other's brains out. On-screen twists and turns are needed to move the plot along.
Yet at some point, we stop distinguishing between fiction and reality and transpose movie standards into ordinary life. And as a result, we come to believe this is exactly what a relationship should look like: that something is constantly happening, nerves are strained, and the degree of passion is turned up to the maximum.
As a consequence, we look for "problematic" partners.
