On February 10, 2017, a film entitled
You Are Not Alone was released on the
@UnseenCinema channel. The title refers to the name of a Telegram group created to
follow Abbas Kiarostami's medical case.The film draws upon three visual elements: excerpts from Taste of Cherry; excerpts from Project, a documentary by Bahman Kiarostami about the development of Taste of Cherry, featuring a cinematic conversation between Abbas Kiarostami and Bahman Kiarostami (behind the camera); and footage from the gathering at Kiarostami's gravesite, held in protest against the initial ruling of the Medical Council, during which a statement of protest was read by Mina Akbari.
The film was made with the full cooperation of the Kiarostami family. In addition to Bahman Kiarostami generously making his documentary Project available for use, all footage of Mr. Kiarostami's sisters, niece, and other family members appears in the film with their knowledge and consent. It was also the family's wish that none of them be identified by name in the film.
Now, on the
tenth anniversary of Abbas Kiarostami's passing (July 4, 2026), the film is being republished by the
@Ciinematheque channel.
One final note: throughout the past ten years, one question has remained in my mind. What is the source of the shimmering light that appears in several moments during the gathering at Kiarostami's gravesite?
