HOW 8 MARCH IS CELEBRATED IN EUROPE

Italy. Life-loving Italians play up ‘women's independence’ in their own way: every year, women of different ages organise parties. Men are not allowed to enter. The festivities start with cocktails in bars, after which female companies move to clubs, many of which are open to girls for free that evening.

Greece. Women's Day is celebrated quietly, in a family atmosphere or congratulating women at work. For many couples it is a good excuse to have a romantic dinner.

In France, it is customary to celebrate 8 March loudly among political currents. Charity fundraisers are organised all over the country. Everything collected is donated to the fund of heroine mothers so that they can afford to go on holiday.

Poland. Women are not given an official day off on 8 March, but men do not forget to congratulate and give them gifts. The flower markets that are open for the holiday are full of spring flowers and they sell out quickly.

THE END OF CARNIVAL ENTERTAINMENT

In Italy, carnival is celebrated in almost every village and town. The Carnival of Venice is undoubtedly the most important and world famous.

It ends in 2025 at midnight on March 4, and Lent begins on March 5, Ash Wednesday.

A banner depicting the symbol of the city, the golden lion, is lowered from the bell tower of St. Mark. The carnival ends with a bright parade of costumes and the final of the competition, with widespread dancing that subsides only with the ringing of bells, marking the beginning of Lent.

Ash Wednesday marks the end of carnival and marks the beginning of the Easter period. In 2025, Easter will be celebrated on April 20, 2025.

🇮🇹 What is special about Portofino?

It is one of the most picturesque ports of the Mediterranean Sea. It has incredible nature and interesting architecture – bright houses and cobbled streets perfectly blend into the local mountain landscape.

And despite the fact that the town is small, there are many attractions there. For example, the bronze statue "Christ from the Abyss" in the center of the city's marine park. It is located underwater at a depth of 17 meters and is one of the most famous diving spots in the entire region.

In addition to water activities and beaches, the city has many boutiques, art galleries, cafes and restaurants where you can just relax.

That's probably why you can regularly meet famous and wealthy people there. And in 2023, Elon Musk, who is now the richest man in the world, was spotted on vacation in Portofino.

🇧🇪 Atomium: a landmark that stands out significantly from others with its modern and unusual design

The facility was opened in Brussels in 1958 and is a kind of symbol of the atomic age and the peaceful use of atomic energy. The height of the Atomium is 102 meters.

The design consists of nine spheres ("atoms"), which represent a cubic fragment of an iron crystal lattice magnified 165 billion times. The diameter of each of the 9 spheres is 18 m. 6 of them are accessible to visitors.

The spheres are interconnected by 23 m long pipes containing escalators and connecting corridors. There is an elevator in the middle of them, which can take you to the restaurant and the observation platform in the upper ball of the Atomium in 25 seconds.

At first, there was talk of demolishing the building, as it did not fit into the overall architectural ensemble of the city. However, the Atomium soon became the main symbol of Brussels, eclipsing the most popular Pissing Boy.

Dancing Forest: a mysterious place on the Curonian Spit

This is a section of the Curonian Spit with a length of only 800 meters, on which pine trees are planted. The nearest settlement is the village of Rybachy, located 4 kilometers from the attraction.

This particular section of the forest was called "dancing" because the pines on it bend in a strange way. And the trunks of some trees are generally twisted into rings.

Scientists still do not know why this forest began to "dance". There are many versions, ranging from the characteristics of the soil and climate, ending with mysticism.

The Dancing Forest is located on the Curonian Spit, a thin stretch of land that separates the salty Baltic Sea and the freshwater Curonian Lagoon. It stretches from the Russian town of Zelenogradsk in the Kaliningrad region to the Lithuanian one Klaipeda.

Back in 1987, the Curonian Spit National Park was established here, and its northern borders now run along the Russian-Lithuanian border.

🇫🇷 One of the most popular attractions in Paris is closed for 5 years

The Pompidou Center first opened in 1977, and it shocked Parisian society. The huge cultural center with its industrial exterior and brightly colored open pipes stood out against the background of the historic Marais district of the French capital.

Pompidou will be closed for repairs until 2030. The museum, BPI, its galleries, cinema, performance venues and shopping areas will all benefit from this change.

The Kandinsky Library, which houses more than 18,000 prints by major artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, will be relocated to the Lumiere building in the 12th arrondissement of the capital for five years, and films and performances will take place at other Paris venues, including the Grand Palais.

Parts of the museum's permanent collection will be displayed throughout France and other countries around the world, including the Pompidou satellites in Malaga and Shanghai, as part of the Constellation program.

🇫🇮 Kummakivi balancing boulder

There is an amazing and somewhat mystical place in the remote wilds of southeastern Finland. An equally large granite stone rests on a huge boulder embedded in the ground.

Translated from Finnish, his name means "strange stone". Contrary to the laws of gravity, it has been suspended for more than 11 millennia.

According to local beliefs, once upon a time, even before the arrival of humans, the lands of Suomi were inhabited by very unusual creatures - trolls and giants. At some point, tired of fighting, the two giant tribes decided to delineate their spheres of influence and set up two huge stones on the border, one on top of the other. That's how Kummakivi appeared.

In 1962, Kummakivi was included in the register of protected natural sites. Therefore, there are no official tours to the miracle stone today. However, a "wild" tourist can visit this place.

🇳🇱 Spherical houses in the Netherlands

The village of Bolvoningen consists of 50 spherical residential buildings. Each house has a diameter of about 5.5 meters and 11 round windows. Houses do not require permanent foundations. They are a huge tourist attraction and annually attract hundreds of tourists eager to see the postmodern works of Dutch architects.

In the late 1960s, the Dutch government began financing experimental housing projects. Thanks to this, iconic structures have appeared in the country: Pete Blom's "Cubic Houses" in Rotterdam and Helmond, the Kasbah complex in Hengelo (pictured below right) and, of course, the spherical houses of Bolvoningen.

An unusual residential village is located in the town of 'S-Hertogenbosch. The word bolwoningen translates as "light bulb house" or "ball house". These buildings really look like giant golf balls. They were designed by Dutch architect Dries Kreikamp, inspired by African mud huts and Eskimo igloo.

❤️ Valentine's Day in Europe

The custom originated from the popular English belief that birds choose their partners on 14 February. For this reason, Valentine's Day has been called ‘Birds’ Wedding Day’. People all over the world take the opportunity to reaffirm their love.

The symbols of Valentine's Day are usually red roses, hearts and Cupid, but each country has its own variations with unique traditions and celebrations of this special day of love. Let's take a look at what's going on in Europe!

In Austria, it is customary for a young man to give his beloved a bouquet of flowers on the 14th of February. But not any flowers, but the ones she prefers.

In Denmark there is a custom to send friends and lovers dried white flowers, called snowdrops.

In France, everyone is congratulated on the holiday - parents, friends, grandparents and colleagues.

Wales has its own tradition for the holiday - to give a wooden spoon with a pattern of a lock and key.

EU proposes to ban wood-burning stoves

Not so much tourists as locals are threatened by a new ban. So they are not very eager to rent out their houses and apartments for a short period of time in winter, as they believe that none of the tenants will save on heating. And tourists will simply ruin the property owners, and will not bring any profit in winter.

The European Commission wants to ban kitchen wood-burning stoves and wood-burning heaters as early as 2027. Czechs in the European Parliament expressed great dissatisfaction with the new law, noting that such a plan would affect tens of millions of people in Europe.

Since the countries of Eastern Europe are categorically against this idea, the new bill is stuck in the corridors of Brussels.

The UK government also wanted to ban the installation of wood-burning stoves in new homes, but this idea was rejected. However, in 2025, Germany has emission standards for wood-burning stoves and fireplaces, and many of them will have to be dismantled.
