🇭🇺 A city at the crossroads of cultures

Pecs is the fifth largest city in Hungary, located just a few dozen kilometers from the border with Croatia and Serbia. The town is small, but it has an interesting history and is distinguished by a special interweaving of cultures and nations.

According to historians, Pecs was founded by the Romans more than two thousand years ago. It served as an important early Christian religious center (the necropolis has been preserved since then), and now it is the center of the episcopate and the home of Hungary's largest university.

At the same time, you can safely go to Pecs for several days or even a week. Because not only the city itself, but also its surroundings are rich in interesting and tourist locations.

There are pre-Christian caves listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and thermal pools (there are many within a 20-kilometer radius around the city), and grape areas with wineries, and artistic creations that few people know about.

The year 2024 was tragic for air travel, but airplanes are still the safest form of transport

According to the Aviation Safety Network, a total of 318 people died in plane crashes last year, making 2024 the deadliest year in aviation history since 2018.

Due to the recent spike in plane crashes, travelers may feel less confident. But are flights really becoming unsafe?

There have been no deaths on commercial aircraft in the entire year 2023. By the end of 2024, the aviation industry has transported 5 billion passengers worldwide. And until the last few days, 2024 was ready to repeat this security record.

"One of the strengths of aviation safety processes is that whenever a tragedy occurs, we analyze what has happened and take appropriate measures to prevent the recurrence of such incidents," the experts explain.

🇮🇹 Lake Avernus – portal to Hell

Around the 8th century BC, the Euboean Greeks founded the settlement of Cumae near Lake Avernus, west of Naples. Virgil glorified him in the Aeneid. It was the Greeks who first associated the lake with hellish elements. For them, it was the entrance to the underworld of Hades, where all the dead souls lived.

Lake Avernus is an extinct crater located in a huge caldera called the Phlegrean Fields. Its circumference is more than 2 km and its depth is 3.22 km. The height of the mountain is 108 m. Views from the edge of the volcano include the Tyrrhenian Sea with its islands of Capri and Ischia.

The name Avernus (Latin) comes from Aornos, which means "without birds" in Greek, due to the belief that poisonous gases rise from the lake and scare away all birds. Once upon a time, people called him Styx, who carried the dead to Hades. This belief was so strong that the inhabitants refused to drink from the stream that flowed underground into the sea.

🇮🇹 Cycling and the Dolomites

If you are also fond of mountain skiing, then you have probably already been to the Dolomites and, perhaps, you have already had the idea of returning here in the summer. And that's a great idea. Summer holidays in any of the 12 valleys will be comfortable, interesting and unforgettable.

Many hotels have a small bike park, but if you are not satisfied with the quality or quantity, then contact the rental offices. If you know how to ride a road bike, but the slides are too difficult for you, you can rent an electric road bike. Then you can ride with everyone and enjoy the views without restrictions.

We recommend a circular route along Lake Varese. In Milan, take the train to Gavirate, the journey time is 1.5 hours. Transportation of bicycles is € 3, you will need to secure them in a specially equipped carriage.

The walk is suitable for a family holiday, but you still need to take into account the fairly frequent elevation changes and many uphills along the way.

🇵🇹 Hiking in Madeira: the best healthy vacation

Madeira is a self–sufficient island. A point in the Atlantic Ocean where the wind is always blowing. And the mountains seem to be low (1800+), but clouds and clouds always cling to them, and they supply water.

Until recently, Madeira was considered a beautiful but very depressing place to relax. However, the local administration caught on in time and began to promote the topic of hiking, as well as trail running.

You can not visit Madeira and not try at least one, the smallest path. Trails are a feature of the island. For fans of healthy lifestyle– it is generally a necessary experience.
We recommend staying on the south coast and ideally not too far from the highway. If you travel around the island by car. This will greatly simplify and speed up movement.

If you don't have a car, stay in Funchal, where most sightseeing and hiking tours pick up tourists from the hotel.

The world's longest tram has reached the line connecting three cities in southwestern Germany - Mannheim, Ludwigshafen and Heidelberg

The length of the vehicle is 58.61 meters. This is a world record. The tram can accommodate 368 passengers. It is equipped with air conditioning and is able to reach a speed of 80 km/h.

Previously, the record belonged to a nine-section tram with a length of 55.9 meters. It has been operating in Budapest since 2016. In fact, such trams perform the function of trains, traveling along both urban and intercity routes.

The tram, which was delivered to Mannheim in September, was manufactured by the Czech company Škoda Group. In total, Germany has ordered a batch of such trams worth more than 260 million euros.

This is not the first time the Rhine-Neckar region has set such a record. Back in the 60s of the last century, a tram appeared here, which at that time became the longest in the world - 38.55 m.

🇮🇹 The story is more than a thousand years long

Sacra San Michele (San Michele) is an abbey built between 983 and 987 on the very top of Pirchiriano Mountain, located near Turin. As believers and those who practice the occult say, here is a place of power. Everyone who gets here feels this, regardless of whether they believe in it or not.

Part of the 200-kilometer journey that pilgrims travel from Mont Saint Michel in France to Monte Sant'Angelo in Puglia passes through the abbey. For others, this is one of the iconic places in the north of Piedmont, which is a must-see. ⠀

Sacra San Michele inspired the writer Umberto Eco to write the best-selling novel "The Name of the Rose". (Il nome della Rosa), which takes place "in some castle in the north," but it's about the abbey of San Michele.

MAN AND WOMAN: WHO CARES MORE ABOUT ROMANCE, INCLUDING TRAVEL

The Humboldt University Institute of Psychology in Berlin and an international research team have come to unexpected conclusions. They were published in January 2025.

It is quite obvious that men are more focused on entering into a serious relationship and devoting as much time as possible to their lady of the heart. In addition, these relationships have a more positive impact on the well-being and health of men than women. Even the life expectancy of men is longer than that of women, depending on whether they are in a serious relationship, the scientists emphasize.

After analyzing more than 50 studies that have been published over the past 20 years, scientists have concluded that men are much less likely to initiate a breakup, as they feel lonely after breaking up with their partner. Men rarely see the positive sides of a breakup. Romantic trips usually strengthen a couple's relationship.

🇬🇧 LIFE ON THE ROAD

A DEFIANT family who refused to sell their family home before it was turned into a roundabout believe that sometimes life ‘twists incredible plots’.

The father-of-seven and grandfather of 12 grandchildren lives on the ring road with his wife Anwen and does not deny it is not always easy. Clwyd Hovatson, 65, feels great when he hears hundreds of cars whizzing past his home on the Denby bypass in Denbyshire, Wales.

The bungalow has belonged to his family for more than 60 years after his parents refused to move when plans for the roundabout were unveiled in the 1970s.

As for accidents, Clwyd says they've been lucky over the years and haven't encountered anything serious, although when the roundabout first came up there were a few instances of people driving round it inappropriately.

🇮🇪 Bee Beds - a new travelling experience for nature lovers

The Irish island of Valentia is well known to tourists. Most tourists come to the island to see the picturesque lighthouse, which has been guarding ships for 180 years. But since the bee houses were launched in the summer of 2023, visitors have been drawn to the island for the unique experience of ‘healing by the hive’.

Visitors usually linger for about half an hour, inhaling the scent of the bees, which emit a unique pheromone. The bees work on a cellular level to soothe your nervous system.

The wooden house has 15 hives, each housing 50,000 bees, making you feel as if you are in the centre of the hive. Each wooden house has two beds, each with five hives underneath. You are very close to the bees but protected by fine mesh. There are also observation hives built into the wall of the house where you can watch all the bees, from the queen bees and trumpets to even the queen.

🇮🇸 Snow-covered gorges and caves of the Vatnajökull glacier

The landscapes that tourists see when visiting them are truly unique. The impressive natural riches are successfully used in film shoots. For example, on the territory of the glacier were filmed several moments of their film about Lara Croft and James Bond.

Ice caves of the Vatnajekull glacier in Iceland are formed as a result of the impact of hot springs located in the area of the mountain range Kverkfjödl. Under the influence of hot water and steam, real labyrinths of ice caves emerge and are carved out of the ice column.

The nearest airport to the glacier is Reykjavik. Then take a bus from to the town of Höbna, which is in the immediate vicinity of Vatnajeküdl. The bus runs 6 days a week in summer (from 15 May to 15 September), 3 times a week in autumn spring time and once a week in winter. In Höbn you can hire a car and get to the glacier via the Icelandic County Road.

🇪🇸 TAPAS AND PINTXOS ARE ICONIC SPANISH DISHES WORTH TRYING

Spain is known for its tapas, which are small plates of hot or cold food served in many Spanish bars, cafes and restaurants. Originally an appetiser or snack served with alcohol, but now a new tradition is to make a meal by combining several different tapas dishes together.

Popular options include patatas bravas (potatoes in spicy tomato sauce), albondigas (smoky meatballs), boquerones (marinated anchovies) and pimientos de Padrón (roasted and salted green peppers). A close relative of tapas are pinchos, small snacks with a slice of bread at the base, all threaded onto a toothpick for easy eating.
