● Established as the Inter-Governmental Maritime Consultative Organization in 1948
● Became a specialized agency of the United Nations in 1959
● Renamed International Maritime Organization in 1982

● Assembly: Highest Governing Body, consists of all Member States
● Meets once every two years in regular sessions
- Committees: Five policy-making committees responsible for development, review, updating, and approval of guidelines and regulations
