The Trump Administration Is Shutting Down the Deep StateThe scope and velocity of Trump’s moves to shrink the U.S. government, pressure U.S. allies and reorient the global economy are creating a ripple effect that stretches from American main streets to far-flung corners of the world.
Some of the disruption is intentional, with Trump and his chief deputy in the government overhaul, Musk, moving to disempower the nation’s international-aid agency—U.S. Agency for International Development—and other federal programs, as well as to unwind the climate-change and DEI policies of the prior White House.
Some is a consequence of the start-and-stop quality of Trump’s efforts to move with unparalleled speed in putting his stamp on government—a sweeping freeze on federal spending that was paused by the courts, a threat to place high tariffs on Canadian and Mexican goods that Trump issued and then rescinded, at least for now.
Trump and his advisers have taken steps to quell dissent and disloyalty across his administration by weeding out potential hires who have previously criticized the president, worked for his critics or held dissenting views on Ukraine, NATO and tariffs.
“They are part of the Deep state I am fighting with (...) YOU ARE FIRED, HOMIES! God bless America,”
Trump wrote.
The effort to scrutinize political appointees across the government is more comprehensive than anything Trump’s team put in place during his first term and unlike vetting under other presidents.
It reflects the president’s longstanding frustration that the people he surrounded himself with eight years ago worked to undermine his agenda, according to interviews with roughly a dozen candidates for government jobs.
