Hi everyone,

January’s results season is here, and here’s what to expect:

*Hidden gems* : Some companies delivered great results last quarter, but their stocks didn’t move much. These could start moving soon, so keep an eye on them.

*Rebound potential* : Companies that struggled and saw their prices fall might bounce back if their upcoming results exceed expectations. A positive surprise could lead to growth, but if the numbers miss, we could see a drop.

*Consolidation* : Companies that did well and saw their stock rise last quarter might stay flat for now. They’ll likely consolidate until the next results.

Featured Question

“When a company goes public , the private investors will offload shares to public in IPO and make money . How does company benefit from it ? I am confused as when they say raising capital”

When a company goes public (also known as going for IPO), it sells shares to investors.

There are two kinds of shares being sold in IPOs.

1. Fresh issue — these are new shares created by the company. Selling these shares in IPOs allows companies to raise money.

2. Offer-for-Sale (OFS) — these are shares currently owned by promoters, founders, early investors, etc. When these shares are sold, the entire money goes to the seller, not the company.

When an IPO happens, the number of fresh issue shares and OFS shares are declared.

Sometimes, there are no fresh issue shares. Only OFS shares are sold.

In such cases, the entire money is going to the sellers. The company does not get any money.

Sometimes, there are no OFS shares. Only fresh issue shares are being sold.

In such cases, the entire money is going to the company.

Practically speaking, most IPOs are a mix of fresh issues and OFS.

Companies raise money whenever there is a fresh issue.

Word of the Day

Sovereign Gold Bond (SGB)

It is a government bond that lets investors invest in gold without actually buying physical gold

It is issued by RBI on behalf of the Indian government.

These bonds have gold value attached to them as a whole number (the bonds have non-decimal gold values).

The value of these bonds is linked to the price of physical gold, so if the price of physical gold increases, the investment value also goes up.

Along with that, investors also get a fixed annual interest of 2.5% on their investments (which is paid twice a year).

Sovereign gold bonds have a maturity period of 8 years, with an option to redeem it after 5 years without any penalty.

6 Day Course

Theme: types of funds

Day 4: Thursday

Private equity funds.

In one way, Private Equity (PE) funds are similar to hedge funds.

Like hedge funds, they also accept money only from certain kinds of investors — mostly very rich individuals, institutions like banks, etc.

The difference lies in where they invest. PE funds aim to invest in private companies.

Or, they invest in publicly listed companies and buy enough shares to gain control of the companies.

Their method of operation can be more active — they try to change the company itself.

There are different kinds of PE funds: early stage investor, distressed assets buyer, acquiring, etc.

Some of them are experts in distressed companies — turning around loss-making companies.

Their lock-in period is usually much higher
